Five Advantages to Choosing Horizontal Directional Drilling

Horizontal Directional Drilling, HDD, allows technicians to drill in a horizontal direction without having to dig up a large piece of land. With HDD, locating pipes for utilities has become straight forward and has eliminated time and destruction. Before HDD was an option, properties and landscapes were in ruins and weeks would pass by before the job was complete.

Horizontal directional drilling has essentially modernized the entire process. With access to HDD, it’s possible to install utilities almost anywhere at a minimal cost, with less disruption to the property.

But What are the Top Five Advantages to Choosing Horizontal Directional Digging?

  • Durability, as the pipes are very strong
  • Quicker installation with less disruption to landscaping
  • Lower installation cost with a smaller crew
  • Flexibility – the system can be installed almost anywhere
  • Minor soil contamination – the impenetrable pipe connections are long lasting

How does horizontal directional drilling work?

The compact drill with one tracking operator is quick and efficient. The drill head is electronically wired for tracking, allowing the operator to monitor where it’s going and the pressure it extends.

As the drill bores into the ground, a solution made up of bentonite polymer follows, ensuring stability of the hole. Once the drill bit creates an underground, semi-circle arc and exits the ground, a reamer is sent back through to enlarge the hole to accommodate the piping.

Finally, professionals will fuse the lengths together to install the polyethylene piping. It is then heated until a seamless connection is made along the full length of piping.
